OK, you got me with that one. LOL.
The new S has a CMOS. This trade-up deal is a great opportunity for CCD lovers. Vintage is always fresh 🙂
Just like restaurants offering fish specials on Mondays, you know it is not fresh, so buy it at your own risk. If you don’t want to suffer buyer’s remorse, save your money and wait for fresh new products.
Received a pre-invitation to my local event on 24/4. Thought they were going to announce mirrorless.
1 camera can buy 1 car
I think its being reduced now because and upgrade is being announced at the end of the month at the Leica event …have you seen the invitation to the event? – it features a huge ‘S’ on it , maybe giving a clue to what will be announced .
Wooow, that’s a steal. I think I’ll buy 3 of them and learn to juggle them.
I recently played with one at the Los Angeles Leica Store. Felt like a sluggish Canon, but wow what a viewfinder and the files, the color, just astounding. I love the CCD look.
Still cannot afford 😛
I understand Leica M cameras, because there are no other modern rangefinders and they are popular with hobbyists who can afford them. But there are substitutes for this camera that cost less, so I’m curious who chooses to buy a Leica S. I can’t imagine many pros use these considering the price. Are they significantly better than a Phase One or Pentax?
I am a pro over 30 yrs, the S series drives like a spots car built like a tank and has F1 performance……………then there’s the Leica glass…….!
You gotta bill a s – – t load of $$ if you possess any MF monster. Out of my league; thought the Leica M gear was pricey!
Almost as good as a A7R. With the cost of these guys, they better be making you money. This is a Pro camera.
I have been fortunate enough to fondle and use the Type 006 on three occasions. An unfortunate potential situation for my wallet. It just feels right in the hand and is nicely balanced with middle length lenses. As a ‘betweener’ sensor, my personal feeling is there should have been a few additional items included in the camera like more focus points w/ selective focus, a faster computational engine to make the camera shoot a bit faster than the 1.2 frames per second, faster wake-up come to mind. Of course these points are arguable. My main point is if the camera behaved a bit more like a professional Canon or Nikon then perhaps more people would move to the Type 006.
Of course the “main” argument is it behaves like a MF camera. I agree with that, however, why does it have to? That is not forward thinking. Offering more would more easily stake out territory in the MF market.
The files are stunning. Period. The glass is stunning. Period. While I know we are all asked to pay the “Leica Premium” the body, even with its relatively recent refresh is still aged. Thus, IMHO it is overpriced, even in the used market.
Personally, I like the look of the files coming off this camera, the tonal roll-off and the look of the sensor.
Hopefully, some of these Type 006 bodies will come to the used market when the CMOS sensor body appears.
Also, I agree with Ken (above) about the stunning viewfinder brightness.
That said. I used the Leica S recently and it is probably the best DSLR ever made (quality/feel, viewfinder). It just needs a better sensor.
Buy it used and save $10k or more 🙂
Leica and Phase/Leaf trying to dump their current cameras and backs before the 50mp CMOS Pentax 645Z and Possibly New Sony MFD Camera arrive at MUCH lower prices.
I dream of a day where so many digital Leica’s have been released that the M9 is finally affordable. 🙂
