Daily Inspiration #402 by Neil Daintree

Hi Steve,

I have been a regular reader of your site for probably the best part of two years and have for those two years always looked with interest at the posts that are entitled “Daily inspiration”. Fascinating to see the photography of others as it inevitably inspires and reinforces the passion of photography and I think it is one of the best sections of your website. I have always hesitated to submit a “Daily inspiration”, there is a certain baring of the soul as well as your technique when publicly showing your photo’s!

I am currently based in the south-east of England and I would describe myself as a photography fanatic and rarely is there a moment when I am not thinking about it! The constant problem is to try to not make it about the gear as GAS is a terrible and time-consuming activity! I like to photograph mainly people but would love to give more time to landscapes. I am about to spend 6+ months away with work, including an extended stay in Nevada so hoping to get some practice at landscapes. I have decided whilst I am away to shoot only film. I am still not sure if this is the right decision but I believe in trying to Keep.It.Simple.Stupid (K.I.S.S) so one film body and one lens for the time being! I certainly don’t mean to stoke the fires of film vs digital (the resulting image regardless of the format is the important thing) but there is something about the basic, mechanical hands on approach of film photography that appeals to me.

Anyway… I have included three images of my Father. I was unsure what to submit and although a theme is not a requirement I didn’t want to just submit randomness! My father, my dad, like most is a very prominent figure in my life. The relationship we have has changed through the years but I have always had a great deal of respect for him. He has been an influence in the way I have led my life and has always been the person whose advice I have sought, although of course not always followed! He has had a difficult past year with the passing of my Gramma, his Mother. It is a difficult thing to deal with, the passing of a parent and something that has made me realise how grateful I am for my parents.
