The Assumption of Mary into Heaven
By Ziv Zadok
The event takes place each year at 25 AUG in the Old City of Jerusalem. From the plaza of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher there is a procession of nuns dressed in black with candles, lilies and a basil stalk in their hands.
The procession goes, headed by clerics and accompanied by Maria’s icon, to the Church of Mary’s Tomb. The entire event takes place in the small hours of the night until the first light. The photography is done with a canon 6D at a high ISO (1600) and a 40mm pancake F-2.8 lens. Link to all the photos of that event:
I love the shot of the women holding the candles.
Dormition of Theotokos…
Assumption in catholicism, not in orthodox 🙂
Good photos.
Yes, and isn’t it on 15th of August, not on 25th?
Dormition: 15.08 – new calendar, 28.08. in old calendar.
Vice versa, my friend! 🙂
` In Eastern Orthodox churches following the Julian Calendar, the feast day of Assumption of Mary falls on 28 August. and the procession on 25 August
Thank you for these. I always find photos of a religious nature (any religion!) very interesting and sometimes moving. You did a good job here.
Too bad you had to use a Canon camera. (just kidding from a dedicated m4/3 user!!!)
