Sony A7II plus Leica lenses meet Mexico City

by Alejandro Ilukewitsch

Hi Steve,

One more I found myself writing to your blog, this time I wanted to share with you and your readers a few pictures from Mexico City, taken with the A7ii and Leica Lenses.

I wasn’t contemplating buying an A7ii, but after a recent trip to San Diego and your posts about the camera, couldn’t escape the GAS bug 🙂

The camera is quite easy to handle, fast, and has great image. I have other cameras so this is not my main camera but indeed is fun to use and the results are satisfying.

I still prefer the experience and results with my Leica M240, but its easier carrying the Sony instead of the Leica in Mexico streets.

I am using a Voigltander adapter, (not the close up one) with Leica Lenses and a Metabones for Nikon.

Off all the lenses I have, the 35mm and 50mm, both 1.4 pre asph, as the 75mm 2.0 asph work like a champ on the Leica. I also have a 28mm 2.8 asph and a 21mm zeiss 2.8 which are beautiful on the M240, don’t really work as good in the Sony. All the Nikon lenses do work great.

Enough talking, here are some picts from Mexico. Hope you like them 🙂

All taken with the 35mm 1.4, except the one of the cars and the portrait of the person with the cowboy hat, which were taken with a 28mm 2.8.

  1. Great photos, really capture the people and their neighborhoods. Just curious and would appreciate your input and those viewing Steve’s website and viewers’ comments – any idea how a ’60s 50mm Summicron, 90mm Elmarit, and a later date 28mm f2.8 Konica M would work on the 7Aii, and would photos taken with these hold up at 16 x 20 ins.?

    • Hi Andrew, I only used 50mm summilux, as 35mm 1.4 both from around 1970s, they are great to handle and balance perfectly, but image quality is not the best. They do have a lot of character and for me are more then good enough, but compare to the original lens for the camera, they lack sharpness. I will think twice about getting these lenses for the Sony only. They are expensive and with the current zeiss options I see no need. I have them because I use them also with a m240.

      • Thank you very much for answering my questions. It’s much appreciated. I look forward to seeing more of your photos.

I don`quite get it compadre. Easier or perhaps safer? I would agree as to shooting thanks to articulated LCD which of course makes it easier to take picts without raising camera up.
    Nice pictures anyway.

  3. Do you print any of your pictures or just post on web? I often can’t see many differences but am looking on my smart phone.

    • I do print the pictures, (not as much as I will like to because of space and costs), jejeje. But actually the main difference I notice comes in the editing process, I seem to be able to pull more of the M, and also I like more the final outcome, it doesn’t mean the Sony is bad, its just a matter of tastes. Also since i am using my same editing process is not fair to compare, i should be adapting to the sony. But for example in case of the RX1, (I also own one), i do find a difference as well towards the a7ii, not towards the Leica.
