Sony to Release α7R II Firmware Adding Uncompressed 14-Bit RAW on October 19th

sony-a7rii-rumors1NEW YORK, Oct. 14, 2015 – Sony Electronics, a worldwide leader in digital imaging and the world’s largest image sensor manufacturer, will release a firmware update on October 19th that adds uncompressed 14-Bit RAW image capture to the acclaimed α7R II full frame interchangeable lens camera.

The new firmware, version 2.0, will be available for download through Sony’s e-support site www.esupport.sony.com on the product page for model “ILCE-7RM2”. In addition to uncompressed RAW capture, which will become a selectable feature (uncompressed/compressed RAW) within the menu system for updated cameras, the firmware also adds the ability for the α7R II to output video via HDMI during use of the Remote Camera Control software, that enables remote capture from a connected computer.

The α7S II and α7R II are compatible with Sony’s growing lineup of α -mount lenses, which now totals 64 different models including 13 native ‘FE’ full frame lenses. In 2016, Sony aims to build the native FE lens lineup to over 20 different models.

  1. Also to be noted is that Sony has announced un-compressed RAW for the A7mkii in new firmware to be released in about 10 days, I believe. Looks like Sony got the message!

  2. Are the A7RII cameras that have been manufactured after this firmware was introduced any different from those manufactured before the firmware? In other words, should I make sure that I have a camera that is of more recent manufacture than those initially manufactured without the firmware?

  3. While the ARW uncompressed file is ~84MB, importing into LR CC with conversion to DNG gives a resulting file of ~45MB. I’ve been told that DNG conversion is lossless by default. If so, DNG becomes a highly valuable asset to providing a lossless compressed file.

  4. what’s the spite here in the comments? I think this is great news for those who need or think to need it!
I am especially happy to see HDMI out while tethering back, now I wish for proper live view tethering with rotation and zoom in, be it Capture 1 or Playmemories…

  5. Why not update the a7R also? Not updating your “old” products and abandoning them before even the warranty has ran out is why I won’t be buying more Sony.

  6. How large is an uncompressed file, and why won’t they just offer compressed lossless 14-bit files?

    • I read somewhere that the uncompressed RAW file will be 82-84 MB. If you convert to a TIFF file, the size is about 270 MB.

        • Unless a customer wants RAW files, I make the adjustments and lock them into a JPEG or TIFF file. A JPEG is still going to be over 30 MB.

  7. Hello Sony, goodby Leica? Let’s see what Leica comes up with on their 20 Oct event, but just in case, I’m boxing up my Leica gear for shipment. It will be sitting by the door until then.
