Thursday News Updates…Fuji X-E1, Monochrom, Olympus 75 1.8 and more!
Hello to all and happy Thursday! As always it has been a hectic week for me as I have been shooting with an M9, Monochrom, OM-D with 75 1.8 and trying my best to get to most of my e-mail! Just wanted to write a quick post about what is coming over the next couple of weeks as well as share a couple of videos that were posted to my YouTube account over the past two weeks but not here on the site.
Fuji X-E1 Review SOON from Amy Medina
Things have been great on this end. Traffic is up, new cameras are flowing in for review, the weather here in Phx is finally cooling down to the 90’s and there seems to be some excitement in the air lately – lots of passion pouring in from readers with some really great guest articles and reports (which will all be posted soon). I will soon have a review of the Fuji X-E1 using Leica M glass from Amy Medina. She has been shooting the camera all week and by next week her review should be up with loads of samples from her. If you do not know Amy, she has written quite a few articles here but also has a website of her own here.
There will also be articles coming next week on “The other way to scan your film”, “The Leica Digilux 2: Another Flashback”, “The Monochrom In Madrid: Bullfights”, and a new film article by Ibraar Hussain! PLUS even more than that but I will leave some as a surprise but one post will feature some of the best images I have seen all year from anyone. 🙂 I will also be showing off some new straps from Barton1972.com which are AWESOME!

The Olympus 75 1.8 Lens Review – Next Week!
I have had the Olympus 75 1.8
I am finding more and more than the OM-D with the 12, 45 and 75 lenses could be just about all anyone really needs. It is fantastic and that Sony sensor inside seriously rocks.

The Leica Monochrom Review will continue..
I am still shooting the Leica Monochrom and still finding that I have a way to go before I really get to where I want to be with processing the files. There is just so much you can do with them..create any look you want. I saw some of the best shots from the MM to date from Kristian Dowling. HIs shots can be seen on this facebook Monochrom group. Kristian is a master photographer and knows his craft. He also happens to be a great guy!
I will be doing my part 3 of the Monochrom review showing some comparison shots between the M9 converted to B&W and the Monochrom. There is indeed a difference but what look one prefers is all personal preference. The pros with the Mono are the much better high ISO, improved Dynamic Range and of course the higher resolution. Shooting at ISO 8000 at night is good where with the M9 2500 is the max you can go and it is noisy.
I do know that when I shoot the Monochrom I feel differently than when I am holding an M9 or even OM-D or Sony NEX. It seems to put you in a “Mono Mood” 🙂 – Part 3 should be up next week as well.
The Monochrom with the 35 1.4 FLE – RED filter on the camera and an OOC shot. The RED filter enhances contrast considerably deepening blacks.
–
The old 1940’s 50 Summitar looks delicious in the one quick test shot I snapped in my yard so I will be using it more on the Mono.
–
Using an IR filter gets expected results – this is an OOC shot… just to test the filter..

Other reviews on YouTube…Kindle Paperwhite, Grado PS-500 Headphones
I have also posted a couple of non camera related reviews on YouTube so take a look below.

Orange Nikon J2 – Ready for Halloween?
Looks like Nikon released the J2 in ORANGE! How about this for a halloween shooting treat? Lol. At least cars could see you at night! B&H Photo has it in stock with the 10-30 and 30-110 lenses for under $700. Then again, the Sony RX100 has a better sensor and faster zoom lens. In reality the J2 is more like a J1.1.
Be sure to check back later today and all next week for all of the new stuff! Also, if you have not yet done so you can subscribe to my YouTube channel as I sometimes upload videos there and not here so if you are interested in seeing them you can subscribe to my channel HERE. I also will post sample images to my Facebook page from various cameras before I write about them here so if you have not yet “Liked” that page, you can do that HERE! As always, thanks for reading and stopping by! I appreciate each and every one of you who do!
Steve
Cats eyes : these are the types of captures when i wish i had a AF 75 1.8 on my EP1.
Cause by the time manually focused with legacy lens (using focus magnification) the moment most likely would have passed.
Of course OMD would be even better than EP1 for fast AF, just touch screen to photo.
Steve. What is the story about this all brass M9 in the photo? Did you do this? As far as I remember you dont own a M9 right now Looking cool. D!RK
This is not my M9 but it belongs to a reader who was so kind to send it to me to do some comparisons. Pretty interesting indeed.
The M9 is mine. As you commented…i remembered he didn’t have an M9 to do comparisons. I took the finish off so it could patina and tell a story over time. The more scratched up and cool…the better.
Nice move. Could be a cool blog entry to see how some users have heavily changed their Leicas. So may are concerned about little scratches or brassing corners that it is refreshing to see some versions that are just raw. Would be great to see it in a well-lit close-up shot. And very generous to give it to Steve for a comparison. Good people here. D!RK
I second that motion, would like to see how you brought out the brass. I think it is beautiful!
Not for the faint at heart. I tore it down and spent quite a bit of time doing things normal people wouldn’t do to a camera. I never liked the gray/silver paint on the M9, so this was a great alternative. I’ll post a gallery somewhere and send a like.
Olympus HAS to release the 75mm in black, surely? If they do I buy one, if not I don’t.
Well they have not released the 12 or 45 in black so does not appear they have any plans to do so. Many would prefer black and Sony is now releasing all of their NEX glass in black when they used to be silver. Maybe Olympus will do the same a year from now 🙂
I love Grado headphones. At the time of purchase I decided to go for the 225i model… and even that is an amazing pair of headphones. For a little over $200, it is possible the best sound for that money.
The 225i is the best sound for the Money. The entire Grado line is quite special. Still enjoy mine daily and i much prefer them to HD800’s I had. They also are much more comfy now than when I bought them. Can leave them on for 2-3 hours without issue.
Picture of the cat is FANTASTIC! Not only is it razor sharp, but the connection to the subject and the “mood” are great.
Thanks! That was the 1st shot I took with the 75 when I put it on the camera. Found out it was damn sharp really quick.
Hi Steve
would you consider the pana 12-35mm is as good as the combo of oly 12,45,75 in terms of IQ? which would you pick to be the one lens for the OMD?
“it is a lens that will last you a lifetime”
I understand that Steve lives off sales and if you want to buy the lens, why not use some of his links. However, calling a 1000$+ digital autofocus lens for a niche system with unclear future “lasting a lifetime” is hilarious.
Do you really believe Olympus will service this lens in ten years? Twenty years? I am sorry… what “lifetime” is Steve talking about?
Hey Steve. Big fan here. Do u offer classes or workshop here in Phoenix. I would like to learn more about photography and my new omd em5 and have some hands on experience with you.
If you are local we can meet up anytime, I am free most days of the week. Send me an email at stevehuff1@me.com
A comparison between OM-D and X-E1 please! this is exciting.
Steve, just FYI, I really don’t think the IR filter is doing what it’s supposed to do on that MM. If the image medium isn’t capable of seeing infrared light, then adding an IR filter won’t have the intended effect. If you want to properly shoot in IR, you need to use infrared film or remove the filter in front of the sensor that otherwise removes infrared light. As far as I’m aware, the MM still has an IR filter, though please feel free to correct me if I’m wrong about that.
Nope, that filter did exactly what it was made to do. That was a dark red IR filter which is not the same as a full IR filter. I shot with a Hoya RM72 today and it can indeed shoot IR..the MM I mean.
MM can shoot with infrared effect? I mean white trees black water and so?
Yeah if you’re just using it as a red filter and not for the IR effect, then it’s all good. Also I did a quick search on the MM’s sensor characteristics and came up with this: http://chromasoft.blogspot.com/2012/05/leica-m-monochroms-spectral-sensitivity.html?m=1
Not sure how reliable that site is as a source, but I looks like the MM does have an IR filter, it just doesn’t cover as wide a portion of the IR spectrum as most IR filters do.
It works really good with a full IR filter like the Hoya R72 – I get the full IR effect with it – no problem. I am posting a few in my next MM review segment.
Steve, I hope when you do your review of the XE-1 you do it with more plebeian glass than the upcoming review with Leica glass. I know you know that many of us just can’t go for those bucks and are no more than at best enthusiast photographers (who rely on you). Please accommodate us. I am waiting to buy my new camera until I get your review and compare it to the OM-D and the X100. Thanks.
+1 …
I’m really enjoying shooting it with Plebian glass:

The BW’s are all well and good, but you nailed it with the Cats Eyes, nailed it, perfect, magical, and the colour and texture!
Thanks!
Time to pull out my old Digilux 2 again 🙂 Looking forward to the article!!
Many thanks for the Kindle Paperwhite review Steve as I was just about to upgrade my Kindle KB. Perfect timing. 🙂
I have the Gariz case on my NEX-7, essential extra for the Sony unless you have hands the size of a 4 year old child. Makes a terrific difference to the handling of the camera and the ring on the base for attaching a Black Rapid strap or similar is a nice touch too,
Thanks and yea. love the Gariz case. I may also get one for my 7 now that the new FW is out and I am going to keep it 🙂
Will you do a review of your own of the Xe1 ??
Possibly in November.
