Only 50 were made and once they are gone, they are gone. B&H Photo just listed as IN STOCK the Special Edition Leica M9 set (NOW SOLD OUT but LENSRENTALS.COM HAS ONE LEFT – UPDATE #2 ! Sold out too!) that is finished in SILVER CHROME (Not Steel Grey) and wrapped in brown ostrich leather. It comes packed with a chrome 35 Summicron lens and it also has the upgraded Sapphire glass. This set also comes with a nice leather strap and again, only 50 were produced. If you break down the price…A new M9 is $7,000, a new 35 Summicron is $3000 and the Saphhire glass option on the M8’s were over $1000 if I remember correctly. That is $11,000 right there. Add to this the matching leather strap, the fact that this is the only M9 you can get in chrome AND that only 50 were made and this is actually not too ridiculously overpriced. Basically you are paying an extra $2000 for the ostrich leather, chrome finish, strap and to be one of the 50 to own this set. I’ve been seeing these sell at various dealers and B&H probably only has one or two so if you have been itching for one, now is the time. Check it out HERE.

PS – Some of you may know that this was actually the M9 Neiman Marcus edition that probably didn’t sell very well when it was $17,000+! And yes, IT DOES COME WITH the 35 Summicron ASPH in chrome, some of you questioned this but it does indeed come with the lens. Again, B&H sold out but lenrentals has one left!

  1. It is totally OVER THE TOP! Just something to mark up and sell…but what I can’t figure out is who wants that ugly bastardization of a classic camera?

  2. At first look, I chose Amy Medina’s photos as the ones which effected me the strongest. They might not be the most aesthetic photos of the group by they literally gave me the chills. Although I’m glad that the young man is well and alive I’m disappointed that it doesn’t portray a real story but was actually staged. Therefore, I’m changing my pick to Miranda’s entry as they portray a real life story and are also very nice aesthetically.

  4. I would have bought it if I was financially able… Just starting with Leica stuff so may take a couple years to get well established.

  7. I’m not even remotely a player in this market, but if I were, the ostrich leather would be a deal killer for me. Gives me the creeps…

    I like the idea of a flat black or even 18% gray M9, with matching synthetic, grippy covering, like Camera Leather’s Griptac. So it looks and feels like a tool, instead of a piece of jewelry.

    But I’d also like a Ferrari, and a trip to Nepal, and a pony.

    • You could take pictures from your ferrari in nepal with a pony in the trunk, now THAT would be a photo story.

      • A better photo story would be that of the Ferrari breaking down in Nepal and a pony towing it to the nearest garage. 😉

  8. idk… not that I can afford it but not a fan of the looks of it, flashy chrome is hardly sneaky and the leather is fake if i remember correclty which is off on a 14k product. My $50 wallet has real leather, might not be ostrich but its real.

    • The lens IS INCLUDED in this set. A chrome 35 Summicron is packed in with the camera. B&H does not list the details as they didn’t take the time to do so it appears. Ken Hansen had two of these, lens rentals had one. All sold I believe. I have seen this set first hand and yes, it comes with the lens. 50 sets were made. Thanks!

      • I have this image in my mind of half a dozen live ostriches being delivered to the Leitz factory through one door and these limited edition cameras leaving the building through another door…

  13. A black paint without product and brand names would be nice. Just black with nothing on it and a cool, rough leather. That would be nice. I wonder why Leica is not opening up the M9 to its a la carte program.
    As much as I understand why people collect cameras, the sad thing is that often such a terrific tool, like a Leica camera, sits in a box for its entire life. People don’t use them because signs of use would influence its value. These cameras only really live when being out in the field. Actually I like that Seal is using his M9T. I bet most of the other versions are sitting behind glass.

    • guessing A La Carte is impossible due to them barely keeping up with demand as it is, Not exactly like M7’s and Mp’s are flying out the doors, customizing one or two a month is a breeze.

    Not sure about that – regarding the link shown, the B&H page says under the section “Remember the Essentials” – A lens and memory card are not included with the camera.

    It’s not a set, just a camera for that cost.

    • It 100% comes with a chrome 35 Summicron! Most dealers had one or two of this set and many sold them already. It’s a well known set and yes it does indeed include a 35 cron asph in chrome 🙂

    • After reading this, I wanted to know how much a live ostrich would cost. So I went over to Answers.com and got this illuminating insight: ‘On average, the cost of an ostrich is strikingly comparable to the cost of the rare giant donkey. In the United States it is moderately more expensive due to the strict ostrich immigration laws in place throughout the mexican border. However, baby ostriches can often be purchased for about 100 dollars as long as they are young. But a full grown ostrich will cost about 10000 dollars.’
